WASHINGTON — A motorcyclist is dead after leading Virginia troopers on a high-speed chase along I-395 early Sunday in Arlington County.
Police say Clint I. Gaskins, 36, of Woodbridge, was spotted traveling south on I-395 near Edsall Road shortly after 2:40 a.m. He was allegedly speeding while weaving in and out of traffic. According to troopers, Gaskins was going 80 mph in a 55 mph zone.
When one of the troopers turned on his lights and sirens to make a stop, Gaskins sped away and the pursuit began.
Troopers chased Gaskins south from I-395 to I-95. At this point, police say, Gaskins was traveling in excess of 130 mph.
Gaskins then exited I-95 and got onto Route 123. But he lost control of his vehicle at Rt. 123 and Commerce Street in Prince William County.
Police say his bike shot off the right side of the road, struck the curb, sidewalk and retaining wall.
Gaskins died at the scene, and while he was wearing a helmet, it was not U.S. Department of Transportation certified.
The incident remains under investigation.
