GLOUCESTER POINT, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Institute of Marine Science is being awarded nearly $835,000 in federal funds for a project intended to help coastal Virginia communities reduce the impacts of flooding.

The Daily Press reports the project involves finding nature-based infrastructure that can help blunt the effects of rising seas and recurrent flooding. That might include tidal wetlands designed to absorb more flood water.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe said in a statement that the grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will provide critical assistance to the state’s “most at-risk communities.”

The institute is based in Gloucester Point. It is affiliated with the College of William & Mary and is among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States.
