VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — A Virginia teen has pleaded guilty to his role in the random slayings of two people last year.

Media outlets report that 18-year-old Nicholas Cates pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree murder and as an accomplice to another killing.

Virginia Beach police said both victims were randomly chosen. Cates, who was 17 at the time, faces a life sentence plus eight years in prison at his October sentencing.

Police say the first killing occurred Dec. 2 when Cates and his 17-year-old friend Angelo Worlds approached 34-year-old Zacarias Aguilar-Ayala. Police say Cates drove while Worlds shot Aguilar-Ayala.

Two days later Cates fatally shot 60-year-old Christine Bender outside her home. Police say Cates was accompanied by then-19-year-old Maurice Boney Jr., who is charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
