WASHINGTON — Fairfax County police say the remains of a missing teenage girl were found in a pond in Sterling, Virginia on Sunday.
Her friends told police that the girl was walking with friends and got into a dispute with a man in a car. Police said the man got out of the car and assaulted her. It was at some point during that incident that the girl went missing, police said.
Police launched a search at 4 a.m., after the girl’s friends said they were unable to find her.
The teen’s remains were later discovered at around 3 p.m. in the 21500 block of Ridgetop Circle.
Police have not identified the teen and said they were awaiting the results of an autopsy to confirm her identity and determine the cause and manner of her death.
A person who was driving suspiciously in the area has been taken into custody and is being treated as a suspect.
