MCKENNEY, Va. (AP) — A tornado that touched down as severe storms moved across central Virginia downed trees and damaged buildings in Dinwiddie County.

The National Weather Service says a tornado touched down just outside of McKenney at 6:51 a.m. Friday. Crews surveyed the area Friday afternoon and found damage consistent with an EF1 tornado.

The weather service also observed straight-line wind damage.

McKenney Fire Chief Ryan Townsend tells the Progress-Index no injuries had been reported as of 1 p.m. Friday.

The newspaper reports hundreds of trees were downed in Dinwiddie County and structural damage ranged from shattered windows to collapsed barns.

The storm then moved to the northeast, prompting additional tornado warnings but no more reports of touchdown. Similar damage was reported in surrounding counties and in parts of Hampton Roads.
